Published 04 April 2025

The City has a plethora of infrastructure projects currently happening across Bunbury. These are in addition to our everyday work such as parks and reserves maintenance, waste, asset maintenance, and more. You can also check out our projects page here, for updates on some of the bigger project updates. Here’s this month’s snapshot of what’s in the works!

🥳 PROJECTS COMPLETED IN MARCH 🥳

The new and highly anticipated playground at Frank Buswell Foreshore is complete and open for our community to enjoy! We will share more on this fun project soon, keep an eye out.

As part of the exciting and ongoing Hands Memorial Oval upgrades, the City has completed the new bus bay at Clarke Street in South Bunbury along with the path expansion between Blair and Spencer streets at Halsey Street.

New speed humps near Bunbury’s Big Swamp have been installed, completing important upgrades to Prince Phillip Drive and Tuart Street. The traffic calming project is part of the City’s ongoing work to improve roadways, create pedestrian-friendly pathways, and implement effective traffic calming measures for our community.

Aspart of the City’s ongoing work to improve our road infrastructure to ensure safe and efficient travel for residents and visitors alike, reseal and path renewal works are finished at Fielder Street between Joseph Buswell Road and Spencer Street in South Bunbury.

The next stage of lighting along the pathway at Horseshoe Lake in East Bunbury is complete. New energy efficient 40watt LED path lights now light up the western side of this popular area.

🚧 CURRENT PROJECTS IN PROCESS 🚧

As part of the City’s ongoing work to enhance safety and driving comfort, and reduce vehicle speeds for our community, we have a number of road projects underway including:

  • Reseal works for a section of road between Mangles and Halsey streets on Spencer Street in South Bunbury. The upgrades are expected to take about eight weeks with one lane of Spencer Street open at all times during the project.
  • Following upgrades last year to the Shenton Street intersection in East Bunbury, works are continuing to reseal the road at Austral Parade, further improving this popular route for road users and the local community.
  • Upgrades to the Xavier Street and Mondak Place intersection in Carey Park, including installation of a raised platform at this popular intersection. Initial preparation works are underway, before the project is finished in the coming months. Current work will involve drainage upgrades, followed by new kerbing and path connections.
  • Kerbing replacement and reseal works at Dixon Street between Kimber and Absolon streets in Carey Park.
  • Reseal and footpath renewal works at Plaza Street, near Spencer Street, in South Bunbury.

The playground replacement project for Ken Cantwell Park in Glen Iris is underway. The upgrades will include the removal of existing playground equipment, installation of new playground equipment, including edging and cushion fall, and at least one piece of accessible equipment.

Landscaping near the recently completed Forrest Park Pavilion continues. These works will see landscaping around the carpark area. More on the pavilion redevelopment here.

The Hay Park netball court refurbishment is continuing with the existing courts being replaced with new courts, and upgrades to drainage, lighting and fencing. Refurbishment works at the site started on13 January and will continue this month. You can find out more and keep up to date via the project page here. Or keep an eye on our socials, where we’ll share an update soon!

Work at Hands Memorial Oval is continuing as the City works hard to make the precinct ready for the upcoming AFL match between North Melbourne Kangaroos and West Coast Eagles on 8 June. You can find out more about the Hands Oval redevelopment via the project page here.

Implementation of the City’s Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan (CHRMAP) continues.

The Sustainability and Environmental Action Plan also continues – outlining actions to implement the City’s Sustainability and Environmental Strategy. Check out the action plan here. Recent key progress includes the City recently hosting the Switch Your Thinking workshop to promote the DIY Home Energy and Water Audit Kit available to loan from City Libraries and capturing new canopy cover and heat data in Bunbury to inform greening prioritisation and compare with baselines data. The City is also organising a Youth Climate Summit for high school students (years 10 to 12) in August, and developed Environmental Sustainable Design guidelines and a civil materials list to guide new City developments and projects.

We are continuing to rollout replacement bin enclosures across the city. New, nicer-looking bin enclosures are replacing the outdated infrastructure. While the City’s annual municipal bin replacements are ongoing as part of normal maintenance for residents, when they need it.

As part of the broader Frank Buswell Foreshore precinct upgrades, the design work to renew and improve the drainage network at Creek Street remains in the programming stage. Read more about the entire foreshore upgrades here.

Waterfront public art installation continues with Andrew Frazer Designs (in collaboration with Jake Coghlan and Peter Jago) working on the Jetty Baths sculptures that will book-end Jetty Baths Park. Check out a sneak peek here. This is an extensive project, with work expected to start mid this year.

As part of the City’s fleet replacement program under its Asset Management Plan, we have taken delivery of three replacement mowers and six out of the eight operational utilities in the City’s fleet. All other 2024-25 replacement items remain on order including two waste trucks, a civil works truck and the other utes.

At Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre, maintenance work is continuing on the fire system.

And, the City continues to upgrade power operations at Stirling Street Arts Centre to meet the electricity demand of the centre including pottery studio, shed, outdoor area and to cater for events.
