Harold Campbell was born in Victoria but relocated with his family first to Donnybrook, then Bunbury as a child. As a teenager, he got a job as a proofreader's assistant with the Bunbury Herald until 1909, when he began work as a reporter with the Daily News in Perth. After the First World War, he moved to Melbourne where he eventually got a job with The Age newspaper, becoming editor of that paper in 1939. His reputation as a journalist and editor grew to the point that he was appointed by then Prime Minister John Curtin, who was a friend of Campbell's, to be a member of the Australian delegation to the San Francisco Conference in 1945, where the charter of the United Nations was drafted. Upon his death in 1959, he received tributes from many public figures including the CEO of the news agency Reuters and the then Prime Minister Robert Menzies.
