This year, Iluka Visions celebrates its 33rd year as the South West’s premiere high school students’ art exhibition.
Annually adorning the walls of the Bunbury Regional Art Gallery since 1991 the exhibition is an awesome opportunity for students living in the South West – spanning Harvey to Manjimup – to showcase their artistic talents to a wider audience.
Hundreds of inspiring pieces have been displayed at BRAG over the years using a variety of mediums.
It is an honour for the City of Bunbury and BRAG to host this extraordinary exhibition that caters to our arts education community, young people, and aspiring artists of all ages.
Past winners catapult to success
Iluka Vision has been a springboard to bigger and better things for a handful of young artists.
Alumni Gemma Weston is now the curator of the UWA Art Collection, and Glenn Iseger-Pilkington is a successful independent curator and Mark Parfitt is the Major Lead for the Bachelor of Creative Arts Fine Art major in the Faculty of Humanities at Curtin University.
In previous years artists were awarded an internship at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art to bolster their art experience.
New space to display students works
This year’s exhibition – open now – takes pride of place at BRAG in the lower gallery consisting of major pieces made by artists in year 11 and year 12 from 13 schools.
Works have been selected by the school’s respective arts staff and exhibit the best of their senior school student artist’s skills and conceptual development.
Artworks range from painting, to ceramic, to wearable art, sculpture, video, photography, and a combination of mediums. They range in content from engaging with current social and political issues, to personal reflections on the human condition, to fan art and pure image-making.
Additionally, lower school student artists were engaged through a new project placing artists in schools to deliver workshops.
These workshops were designed and delivered by professional artists Alex Desebrock, Dee Mosca, Paul Reynolds, and Charlotte White.
Exhibiting the collaboration of almost 300 students from years 7 to 10, these projects were an invaluable experience for students to work directly with practising artists. You will see these works exhibited throughout the gallery, in between other works and in the virtual reality headset installation.
