History

Bunbury Museum and Heritage Centre City collection. Photograph of the Convent of Mercy, Wittenoom Street, Bunbury late nineteenth century by James Henry Shaw.

The foundation stone of the BRAG building was laid in 1897, making it one of Bunbury’s significant historic sites. Originally a convent, the building has undergone several changes as a school and, finally, an art gallery.

The Bunbury Regional Art Gallery first open on 14 February, St Valentines Day, 1987. The establishment of the organisation was the result of joint contributions by current day key stakeholders, The City of Bunbury and the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
Initially run by a committee of Council, in 1995 the Bunbury Regional Arts Management Board was established as an independent, not for profit, incorporated association to manage the Gallery. Historic links with organisations such as the City of Bunbury Art Collection Committee are maintained through the Management Board.

Since its inception, the Bunbury Regional Art Gallery have provided the South West community with access to exhibitions of the highest caliber from regional, state and national sources. The exhibition schedule has been complemented by extensive education programs. Further, the Gallery have played a role as an important community facility and meeting place. These functions continue to be representative of the organisation’s dominant activities and services.

You might like to visit the gallery for a building history tour or lead your own self-guided tour. All group visits must be booked 6 weeks in advance. Upon booking a self-guided visit, you will be emailed an information pack.
